Watch the Bezel

By Martin Jansen, Owner of Jansen-PCINFO

This is a short article about determining the age of a computer, monitor or other device at a glance.   Watch for the bezel which is described as a removable plastic panel covering the front of a display.

Generally speaking, the smaller the bezel the newer the computer.  This also includes cell phones and tablets.  Let’s compare a first generation iPad with the newest model:

Notice the bezel is about an inch wide on the left, but the new version is half that width or less.  Today, many flagship cell phones are considered edgeless or curved with no apparent bezel.

Our ancient TV has a huge 2 inch bezel, while our newer Samsung has a ¾ inch bezel.  Again, older hardware usually means a wider bezel.

So, next time you’re hunting for a new computer or device, check out the bezel to determine the age and quality of the device.
