The common perception, reinforced by some politicians, is that the rich don’t pay their fair share of taxes.  Actually, it’s the top 50% of earners who contribute almost all of the nation’s federal taxes — nearly 98%. The bottom 50%, who individually make below $46,637 annually, account for about 2.3% of the country’s tax receipts.
